If a credit builder credit card doesn’t pass all the red lines, its star rating is calculated based on how far away it is cumulatively from the high bar set for a top rating. These include: the representative and highest APR must be no higher than 34.9% the representative interest rate for cash withdrawals must be no more than 2.84% a month the fee for balance transfers must be no more than 3% the representative interest rate for balance transfers must be no more than 2.53% a month the fee for using your card abroad must be no more than 2.99% and, a 24-hour helpline must be available. It sets a series of red lines that credit builder cards must pass to get a top five-star rating. They are based on in-depth research by the independent consumer group Fairer Finance. Our star ratings look at the interest rates and fees charged by each credit card.
